March 2026
The New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) is proposing to re‑site the Brooklyn Brownstone School (16K628) so that the school’s students (grades K–5 and early childhood classes) can come together under one roof at Building K025 (787 Lafayette Ave.) starting in the 2026–2027 school year.
Currently, Brooklyn Brownstone is split across two buildings, with most students in K035 (272 MacDonough St.) and its early childhood classes in K025, creating logistical inefficiencies and limiting the school’s ability to operate as one unified community.
K035 also houses M.S. 035 Stephen Decatur (16K035), a district middle school serving students in grades 6-8, and one site of multi-sited District 75 school P.S. K141, which serves students in grades K-8. K035 is significantly overcrowded, with its Brooklyn Brownstone campus having a capacity of 261 students but an enrollment of 325 students, resulting in an organization utilization rate of 125%, and causing space constraints for students and staff and undermining the school’s ability to provide an optimal learning environment.
Under the NYCDOE’s proposed plan, Brooklyn Brownstone would share K025 with Success Academy Bed-Stuy 3 Middle School (grades 5–8), which already operates in that building. The District 16 Superintendent’s office, now located in K025, would be moved elsewhere in the district to make room.
This proposal reflects a community‑driven planning process that began after the closure of P.S. 25, which previously occupied space in K025. A Joint Public Hearing on this proposal was held Monday, March 16, 2026. The Panel for Educational Policy will vote on the proposal on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at 6 p.m. at the High School of Telecommunications Arts & Technology in Brooklyn (see here for additional details, and here for related materials).
